Barcelona player Gerard Pique (35) announced his retirement on Thursday after 25 years at the club, saying he will play his last game at the Camp Nou against Almeria on Saturday.

In an abrupt announcement, Pique posted an emotional video on social media saying that he has fulfilled everything he dreamed of as a child. He spent more than 20 years at Barcelona, starting off as a youth player.

Between the lower divisions and the first team, he stood out for his leadership, his management of aerial balls and his superb technical ability.

"Now that the dreams of that boy have come true, it's time to close that circle. I've always said that after Barça there won't be another team and that's how it will be. This Saturday's game will be my last at the Camp Nou."

He also stated: "Sooner or later, I'll be back. See you at the Camp Nou. Visca Barça always".

The Spaniard was under contract with FC Barcelona until 2024. However, his performances in the last three seasons showcased his visible decline, with Xavi preferring a number of other defenders ahead of him. This may have played a part in his decision to call it quits.

However, that doesn't take away from the astonishing career he had. Regarded as one of the best centre backs of his generation, he collected 35 trophies during his 18-year senior career.

They include nine league titles in Spain and England, four Champions League trophies, as well as a World Cup and European Championship.
