EuroCup roundup: Badalona the team beat, newcomers Paris and Gran Canaria both record wins

The 2022/23 EuroCup Basketball season got underway this week with the first-round fixtures played on Tuesday and Wednesday. EuroCup is EuroLeague Basketball's second-tier Europe-wide competition.

Tuesday’s matches

Group A

Hapoel Tel Aviv - London Lions 76-59

Hapoel Tel Aviv got a comfortable home win over the London Lions with the help of 19 points by J’Covan Brown. Croatian Tomislav Zubcic (21 points) and former NBA player Kostas Koufos (14) did their best in a losing effort for the visitors.

Turk Telekom - Paris 75-90

With the game opening up to a 21-10 lead for Turk Telekom Ankara, everyone expected the EuroCup newcomer Paris to give in easily. However, in the end, the French side, who have not won any games after four rounds in their domestic league, prevailed on the road with a solid win.

Kyle Allman (22 points) and Amar Gegic (17 points) stole the show against the duo of Frenchmen, Axel Bouteille and Jerian Grant, who had 16 points each for the home side.

Group B

Ulm - Venezia 81-80

Teenage Montenegrin Fedor Zugic grabbed 18 points to lead Ulm to a close 81-80 win over Umana Reyer Venezia. Fellow youngster, Spaniard Juan Nunez added nine points and eight assists, while Alerik Freeman scored 19 points in a good effort for the away side.

Joventut Badalona - Brescia 80-63

Joventut Badalona prevailed over Brescia by 17 points proving that they are the team to beat in the competition. Henry Ellenson (18 points) was the main attraction for the home side, while John Petrucelli and Amedeo Della Valle scored 13 points each.

Wednesday's matches

Group A

Cedevita Olimpija - Bursaspor 73-81

2022 runner-up Bursaspor showed its teeth on the road against contender Cedevita Olimpija. Anthony Clemmons scored 21 points and Ygitcan Saybir added 19 points as the Turkish team prevailed in Ljubljana.

Prometey - Lietkabelis 82-71

Ukrainian side Prometey, now based in Riga, got their campaign off to a promising start with a victory over Lithuania's Lietkabelis. Gian Clavell top-scored for the hosts with 20 points.

JL Bourg - Cluj-Napoca 88-85

French side JL Bourg held on at home to beat Romania's Cluj-Napoca by three points. Leonardo Meindl of Cluj top-scored in a losing effort with 19 points, James Palmer (17) led for JL Bourg.

Group B

Trento - Promitheas 76-89

In Trento, Promitheas Patras took an 89-76 win thanks to the powerful trio of Trevis Simpson (22 points), Joe Young (22 points) and Arnoldas Kulboka (18 points and 11 rebounds). The Greek side was up 29-43 at half time and led for double figures for the entire second half.

Gran Canaria - Slask Wroclaw 90-81

AJ Slaughter scored 16 out of his 23 points in the fourth period to lead Gran Canaria past a tough Slask Wroclaw team. With the two teams tied on 64 at the beginning of the final quarter, Slaughter hit one bucket after another to put Gran Canaria up 82-74 with 3:22 to play. Slask Wroclaw remained persistent but the guard lead Gran Canaria to victory.

Ferran Bassas added 17 points (including two key three-pointers in the fourth period) plus six assists for Gran Canaria. Lukasz Kolenda led for the visitors with 23 points.

Buducnost - Hamburg 66-73

Hamburg got their season underway with a win on the road against Buducnost in Montenegro. Lukas Meisner netted 15 points to lead Hamburg to the win.
