A goal and two assists from Denzel Dumfries saw the Netherlands to a comfortable 3-1 second round victory over the USA to become the first side to progress through to the quarter finals at the World Cup. There were also goals for Memphis Depay and Daley Blind in the Dutch win.

Full Time: Netherlands 3 USA 1

17:54 CET: The Dutch are through and they look rarely troubled against the US.

It was a performance to savour for Dutch boss Louis Van Gaal, who saw his side at their clinical best in the first half as they scored with their two shots on goal through Depay and Blind, and then defend stoutly throughout the game, only beaten by a bizarre and unintentional flick from Haji Wright.

The USA lacked creativity in the final third and struggled to break apart a Dutch defence that were comfortable to sit deep and soak up the pressure.

The Netherlands will now wait on the result of tonight's game to see whether they will face Argentina or Australia in the next round.

From the match stats, it shows the US did have much of the ball as well as most shots, but they were unable to create anything clear cut for much of the tie.

Second Half

93': The game is peetering out on the pitch and the Dutch waste some more time with two changes of their own. Wouter Weghourst and Matthijs de Light come on for Nathan Ake and Cody Gakpo - both impressive.

92': Final change for USA as Antonee Robinson comes off for Jordan Morris.

90': Into stoppage time and we will play an extra six minutes.

87': Frenkie de Jong booked for a professional foul as the US try and break forward. Easy decision for the referee.

85': You know it's getting desperate when Walker Zimmerman tries an overhead kick. His effort from a corner goes wide for the US and with just five minutes left of the 90, it feels like they will be saying goodbye to this World Cup.

82': Xavi Simons is on for the Dutch, he replaces Memphis Depay.

81: DUMFRIES! NETHERLANDS HAVE THEIR CUSHION AGAIN!

Heartbreak for the US, who had just got themselves back in the game, but it's their nemesis throughout the game who has scored. Denzel Dumfries is unmarked at the back post and he volleys home a cross with style to almost book the Netherlands' spot in the quarter-final.

78': Nearly another chance for Wright - this time, though, Noppert does well to beat him to the ball with a slide tackle. From that moment, Bergwijn gets in behind the US defence and fires just wide of Matt Turner's goal. Then, Pulisic has a strike from range, which Noppert gets behind. All happening now in this second round clash. Are we set for another dramatic finish in this World Cup?

76': WRIGHT! USA HAVE A LIFELINE!

A quite remarkable finish from the substitute and it's hard to think he knew much about it. Pulisic sends in a low cross that Wright - whilst falling over - manages to get a boot on it and the ball loops into the far corner. Game on!

75': BUT THEN! Haji Wright gets onto the ball, goes around the keeper but sees his shot cleared off the line. So close for the USA. DeAndre Yedlin is on for Sergino Dest.

74': At the other end, there's not much creativity for the US. Gio Reyna cuts in off the right but his effort is way wide. The USA have lost that attacking threat of the first half.

71': Matt Turner keeps this tie alive! Kopmeiners shoots from range and the US stopper palms it into Depay, who he then saves from. He has kept his side in it here.

69': Dumfries and Robinson have had a goo and painful battle on that side - Robinson prevents a cross from the wing back but it goes behind for a corner. From that set play, Virgil Van Dijk heads over the bar. Just under 20 minutes for the USA to pull off a remarkable comeback.

65': Two more changes for the US incoming. It looks like Brendan Aaronson will be one of them. In more damning news for the Americans, Antonee Robinson has gone back down following that Dumfries collision. It looks a sore one- he is back on his feet though. Aaronson will come on for Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie is coming off for striker Haji Wright.

64': Denzel Dumfries and Antonee Robinson collide in the US penalty box. The Dutch wing back looks in pain but manages to get to his feet.

62': The Dutch, breaking away, set up Depay for a shot and Matt Turner is nearly at full stretch to turn it over the bar.

60': An hour into the contest and we have our first card of the game. Teun Koopmeiners fouls Christian Pulisic and Wilton Sampaio gives the Dutch midfielder a booking.

57': After allowing the US much of the ball in the first half, the Dutch are now playing game management football and keeping possession more and more. The way they have controlled the game since their first goal has been impressive.

54': Close from Weston McKennie, who fires just over the bar from the edge of the box. The US are getting forward more and more now, which may mean more gaps for the Dutch to exploit.

52': Some space opens up for Christian Pulisic, and he cuts in on his right foot to get a shot away but it's straight at Noppert, who collects with ease.

50': Dumfries, once again, puts in a brilliant cross and Matt Turner in the US goal has to be at his best to deny the Dutch a third reacting well twice to keep the scoreline at 2-0.

49': Early corner for the US, who will be chasing a goal as soon as possible to give them a footbhold in this game. Pulisic sends it in and it falls to Tim Ream, who pokes it past the keeper but not past the defenders on the line. It was Cody Gakpo back there!

46': Back under way with changes for both sides. Davey Klaassen and Martin De Roon both off for the Netherlands as they are replaced by Steven Bergwijn and Teun Koopmeiners. The USA, now chasing the game, have bought on Gio Reyna for Jesus Ferreira.

16:48 CET: What a stinger for USA. They have been in control of the ball for much of the half but they find themselves two goals down from two lapses in concentration on their left side. Denzel Dumfries the architect for both goals with Depay and Blind supplying the finish. This is pure knockout football from the Dutch, and they will be so happy of their first half.

First Half

46: A DUTCH SUCKER PUNCH ON THE STROKE OF HALF TIME!

It's Denzel Dumfries the creator again and it's almost a carbon copy of the first as Daley Blind gets onto the cross from his wing back colleague, burying the shot and doubling the Netherlands' lead.

45': Dest! BLOCKED! The full back springs forward and manages to get inside the Dutch box only for his shot to be blocked. What a great run - the US need more of that from him. One minute of added time.

43': The closest USA have come since Pulisic's effort in the first couple of minutes and it's through Timothy Weah. The forward wraps his right foot around the ball from the edge of the box and Noppert makes a smart save, punching it to safety.

41': Five minutes to go until half-time and it feels unlikely we will see another goal in this half. Sergino Dest was a real force against Iran on the right side for the US - in this game, he has been rarely used as the US seek Pulisic down the left. Maybe that is something to change at half-time. On the pitch, Pulisic overhits a pass to Robinson that, if weighted correctly, could have sent him in on goal.

37': The happiest person in the stadium so far will be Louis Van Gaal. His 'safety first' football is working beautifully so far as they have the goal along with a structured way to see off the US' attacks.

33': After so much excitement throughout the group games, this game is struggling to match that as a more pragmatic risk-averse football is being shown by both sides. The US have had 56% of the ball, but more starkly, just the one shot.

28': Some more nice play from Depay, who is looking the most threatening place on the pitch. After some good trickery, he wins his side a corner, which the US deal with.

25': Other than that try from Depay, it has been the US in possession since the goal. However, the back three for the Netherlands are standing firm.

21': Memphis Depay is obviously in confident mood after the opener, and he tries his luck from a tough angle. It does worry Matt Turner, who dives for it, but it's well wide.

17': The US are attacking with numbers in the opening portion of this game and the Dutch are struggling to contain. Antonee Robinson drives forward, but he just can't find the right ball.

12': Normal service resumes as Pulisic puts in another great ball, but it's just behind three of his onrushing teammates.

10': WITH THEIR FIRST ATTACK, THE DUTCH LEAD!

Under the pump for the first 10 minutes, the Dutch show how deadly they are. In a great counter, Denzel Dumfries finds an unmarked Memphis Depay, who slots home and sends the Dutch fans into a frenzy. So clinical from the Netherlands.

8': Christian Pulisic has been very lively so far for USA - a much welcomed sight given his injury in the last game. He crosses a ball trying to find a US shirt, but Van Dijk gets it away.

5': It's been all one-way traffic in the first few minutes as the Dutch are unable to get out of their own half. Pulisic and Weah both find themselves in space moments after each other, but neither can find a shot. Early warning for the Dutch.

3': Early spell of possession for the US that culminates in a great chance for Christian Pulisic. He finds himself free at the back post one-one-one with Andres Noppert, and it's the keeper who comes up clutch, making a big save just three minutes into this second round game.

1': Only one player from both sides is injured for the game, that is Josh Sargent of ths USA. Everyone else has a chance to make an impact today and it will be the Dutch to get us started.

Pre-match

15:57 CET: Wilton Sampaio from Brazil will be today's referee.

15:54 CET: Time for the anthems.

15:50 CET: From 32 teams, down to 16 - we are now ready to for the second round. Both sides in the tunnel, who will triumph in the first last 16 game?

15:30 CET: Just 30 minutes to go until kick off and anticipation is building in Khalifa International Stadium as the fans are making their way in.

One of the biggest threats today is Cody Gakpo and our friends at 11Hacks have put together a data-driven analysis on the Dutch forward.

15:15 CET: After a hugely eventful group stage, we now have the 16 teams set to battle it out for the World Cup. But, for one of the Netherlands or the USA, this will be their final game of the tournament.

Louis Van Gaal's men breezed through Group A against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar, picking up seven points whilst the US finished second behind England in Group B.

For the Dutch, they have kept consistent with their starting line-up - Cody Gakpo will be leading the line after scoring in all three games so far. Christian Pulisic, who netted the winner against Iran, is fit to start after taking an unfortunate knock during that goal.

Team News

Key attacker Christian Pulisic was included in the United States line-up for Saturday’s last-16 game at the Qatar World Cup against the Netherlands at the Khalifa International Stadium.

But striker Josh Sargent, who was also injured in their last group stage game, a win over Iran on Tuesday, misses out as he has not recovered after hurting his right ankle.

Coach Gregg Berhalter has replaced him with Jesus Ferreira, while Walker Zimmerman replaces Cameron Carter-Vickers in the defence.

Pulisic was taken off at half-time against Iran and had been a doubt for Saturday’s game with pelvic bruising, but he was declared fit on the eve of the game.

The Dutch stuck with the same starting line-up that beat Qatar in their last group game on Tuesday, with Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay as the attacking duo and Maarten de Roon in a midfield enforcer role alongside playmaker Frenkie de Jong.

United States: Matt Turner, Sergino Dest, Walker Zimmerman, Tyler Adams (capt.), Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie, Christian Pulisic, Tim Ream, Tim Weah, Jesus Ferreira

Netherlands: Andries Noppert, Daley Blind, Nathan Ake, Virgil van Dijk (capt.), Jurrien Timber, Denzel Dumfries, Marten de Roon, Davy Klaassen, Frenkie de Jong, Cody Gakpo, Memphis Depay.
