In a short round of NHL matches, Winnipeg, New Jersey and Edmonton all won on the road. In the Oilers' big 7-1 win over San Jose, Connor McDavid (26) scored twice to move to 37 goals for the season.

San Jose 1, Edmonton 7

Edmonton led 3:0 in the 29th minute thanks to two goals by McDavid, who also had an assist. The league's leading player has already surpassed 80 points (37+45) in just 44 games.

"I feel good, but it's all about the team and winning," said McDavid, who celebrated his 26th birthday on the day of the game.  Leon Draisaitl (1+2) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1+2) also collected three points.

The Oilers increased their lead to 7-0, with San Jose scoring a consolation in the 56th minute when Oskar Lindblom robbed Jack Campbell of a clean sheet.

"We failed in all game situations. I was disappointed with the forwards and the defensemen. Only the performance of the goalkeeper I can't complain about. We have to put this game behind us quickly," said San Jose coach Dave Quinn.

Pittsburgh 1, Winnipeg 4

After the Jets opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Pittsburgh responded in the 17th minute with the game's opening goal, scored by Blake Wheeler. Winnipeg decided the game between the 38th and 47th minutes, during which Mark Scheifele scored twice and Nikolaj Ehlers once.

"We didn't have any stowaways, everyone contributed their part to the win. It was one of our best performances of the season. We stuck to the system and played the way we wanted. That's the thing about moving on and being successful," Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said.

Anaheim 2, New Jersey 6

Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt scored two goals apiece for New Jersey in their road win. The Devils led 3:0 after the opening period and 4:0 in the 32nd minute.

Later on, Adam Henrique and Trevor Zegras added two for the Ducks with point-blank shots to cut the lead to 1-4 and then to 2-5 but it wasn't enough as the Devils proved too good.

New Jersey set a new NHL record, becoming the first team to win 16 of its opening 19 games away from home.

"I told the guys I'm proud of them. It's tough to win away from home on a regular basis, but our team found a lot of different ways to bring the game to a winning conclusion. This time we benefited from a good start. It was a nice change because the last couple of games we had to make up a loss," said Coach Lindy Ruff.
