Marseille snatch last-minute winner to down rivals Lyon

In the 122nd Choc des Olympiques, Marseille snatched all three points from Lyon in the 93rd minute thanks to a Malo Gusto own-goal. Victory for Les Phoceens extended their unbeaten run to seven games in Ligue 1.

For any neutrals tuning in for a bit of Sunday night entertainment, the channel would likely have been changed if the opening stages were anything to go by.

It took 20 minutes for either side to manufacture a shot on goal, and when they did Cengiz Under’s effort was easily gathered by Anthony Lopes.

You sensed that this game needed either a moment of magic or a mistake to spark it into life and Corentin Tolisso almost provided the mistake when his wayward header caused mayhem in the Lyon box but a wild Ruslan Malinovskyi strike spared his blushes.

There was to be no such reprieve on the stroke of half time for Lyon though as Alexis Sanchez beat the offside trap and after his initial strike was smartly stopped by Lopes, Under was on hand to fire home at the second time of asking.

Lyon were fortunate not to be trailing by two goals five minutes into the second half, as Lopes ws again on fine form to deny Jonathan Clauss.

It was hard to see where Lyon got back into the game if truth be told, with the hosts hitting the hour-mark without as much as mustering a shot on target.

A one-goal lead was always ropey though, and after missing several chances to double their advantage Marseille were punished when the effervescent Alexandre Lacazette bundled home his 20th league goal of the season at the far post.

Marseille’s response was impressive, but when the influential Under saw his effort cannon back off the bar, you sensed it probably wasn't going to be their night.

However, in a twist of stoppage time fate, Marseille turned the game on its head and snatched all three points in rather comical circumstances.

Not for Lyon that is, who were the victim of a strange own goal with Sinaly Diomande clearing the ball against Malo Gusto and the ricochet drifted into the corner to hand Marseille their first away victory against their rival since November 2007.
